The UK government recently partnered with the molecular diagnostics company Optigene to develop a pilot study involving more than 14,000 people to test the efficacy of its saliva test. Research confirms that such traditional measures are generally effective in influencing the intention to change behavior, but that actual behavior change often does not occur. Information about spreading the virus through the hands therefore often leads to the intention to wash the hands more often, but this action will not always be carried out consistently.
Communication about the desired behavior should be as clear and easy as possible. Choose simple language to make desired behavior concrete. For example: 'wash your hands for at least 30 seconds when you leave or enter the house', instead of 'wash your hands more often and for longer'. Showing the desired behavior – for example via instructional videos – can further clarify and reinforce the message (table).
